ELKO - With its roaster emissions troubles behind it, Jerritt Canyon Mine owner Yukon-Nevada plans to increase its gold production to more than 200,000 ounces a year by the end of 2010 - a 66 percent increase over 2007 levels.
Yukon-Nevada President and CEO Graham Dickson in an e-mail said the significant increase will be realized “by improving infrastructure and increasing current reserve and near mine exploration.”
One of the few mines to actually operate within the boundaries of Elko County, Jerritt Canyon is also making progress on its development of the mine's Starvation Canyon project located in the southern end of the property. Infill drilling will take place this summer, said Dickson.
Most significantly, perhaps, is an effort to better focus its operation on safety and “sound environmental stewardship as the route to increased profitability.”
The state last year put the mine on notice it was emitting more mercury than allowed - though not in excess of Clean Air Act standards. Since then, the operation has spent significant money upgrading its aging infrastructure.
Yukon-Nevada is also about to begin open pit operations at its Ketze River Project in the Yukon Territory.
